My Period Went Haywire When I Quit

For the first month I was sweaty, irritable, and bleeding so lightly I wondered if my period had simply stopped showing up. The second month looked similar. The third month I bled lightly for 27 days straight, and then had the heaviest period of my life.

Nobody had warned me. Not my doctor. Not the cannabis quit guides written for people without uteruses. Just forums full of women saying: same.

Cannabis affects estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid function in ways we're only starting to talk about openly. Use heavily for years, stop abruptly, and your body may need months to find a new rhythm, not just for mood and sleep, but for menstruation itself.

This isn't a reason to keep smoking. It's a reason to expect turbulence and not interpret every weird cycle as catastrophe. Bloating, breast tenderness, hot flashes, libido crashes, women report versions of all of it during post-cannabis-quit adjustment.

See your own cannabis craving pattern before it surprises you.

Afterleaf helps women track cannabis cravings alongside their cycle.

What helps: track your cycle alongside your quit date. Note when symptoms spike. Bring patterns to a provider you trust, not for judgment, but for context. You're not broken; you're recalibrating.

If bleeding is extreme or scarily irregular, that's worth medical attention regardless of quit status. But for many women, the chaos does settle, often around the same window when cannabis withdrawal starts to lift.

Your body isn't punishing you for quitting weed. It's finally allowed to respond to something it adapted around for years.

TL;DR

Heavy cannabis use can disrupt hormones; quitting weed may temporarily throw your cycle off. Chaotic periods after stopping are a reported pattern, not proof you should go back.
